Decorative stones

StabgleStabgle Posts: 3
Hi new to gardening and i have just filled the top of my plant pots with small white stones now im wondering if it was a good idea! Its looks nice but will it affect the plants? So far i have only done 2 rhododendrons( left a gap around the stem for these) , 2 flamingo trees an some shrubs! I cant find any useful info online! Thanks!

Should be more of a help than a hindrance by conserving moisture and stopping weeds but if white, might go weirdly green over time?  Happened to me once but couldn't tell you what sort of stones thet were.

I used small white stones for a seasonal  planter but obviously they got mixed in with the soil when I replaced the plants. Then I got vine weevil and kept mistaking the stones for grubs. Took me ages to remove them!

If they're quartzite (gleaming pure white) they'll not affect soil ph or anything else that might affect the plants. They'll help conserve moisture and look tidy. Limestone (dull greyish white or buff) would not be as good for the rhododendrons as it is alkaline.
