Shrub & Plant help for top of stone walled Bank

Hi, I'm really hoping someone is able to give me some help please. I am in the process of clearing the top of our stoned wall, which at the moment is completetly full of weeds & long grass. The wall is about 40 metres in length & about a metre & 1/2 wide. It is mostly in the sun all day apart from a section down the side of the house which is shaded. I would like to plant a mix of shrubs & plants that will need no maintenance & will help to reduce the weeds. Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Erigeron Karvinskianus (Mexican fleabane) for non stop billows of pink and white daisies that will self seed in the gaps and cracks

All garden plants need maintenance , it's just that some need less maintenance than others !
Cotoneaster microphyllus might fit the bill here ; white-flowers , red-berries and good for pollinators too . Can be kept to your size requirements easily .
A periodic (say every two years) light trim with shears to keep tidy is all thats needed .
The response to light trimming will encourage denser growth which will lead to weed suppression .

You could experiment with Stipa gigantea, it would like it there and look phenomenal... but not sure whether the wind would flatten it. Sedums could work (e.g. Matrona). Careful about planting anything with roots that might affect the wall.

The type of plants I have seen colonising similar walls are Hypericum Calycinum, Centranthus Ruber, Corydalis Lutea and Cymbalaria Muralis. All easy to grow.
  • Thank you for all of your suggestions. I will have a look in to them all. Can't wait to get planting, after I have finished tackling the weeds!
