The usual advice from the local council Pest Officer if you have Rats is first to stop putting out any feed for the birds for several weeks and see if that works. I'm not sure they worry too much about Mice but I assume the advice would be similar. Having said that, in a built up area such as described, it may be that Mice are considered vermin and therefore subject to the same treatment as rats ?
Pretty much so Philippa from what I've seen on pest control websites. I think most of us gardeners know rats and mice are two very different things, but in urban areas, despite them being endemic and never far away, the attitude is eradicate on sight.
You are near the Camley Street Natural Park, on the canal. I would go there with bird food and enjoy the birds and other wildlife there. They can also advise you on supporting bird life in the area and at home.
You could put out just a small amount of bird seed so that it all gets eaten early in the day, bring the feeders inside the house overnight and sweep up every day so that there is no food lying on the ground. You could use a feeder that sticks onto your window maybe and put a little tray on the window ledge to catch fallen seed?
