Bee

I have a couple of bees hanging out under one of my hanging pots. If I get close to deadhead the petunias,  sometimes one has flown out seeming annoyed and buzzing. I leave right away.  It has dark black stripes and deep yellow. Looks mean.  I haven't seen another bee like it.  What kind is it? It's not a bumble bee or wasp or hornet.

I can't see it. Is it in the photo?
Some bees nest in pots etc, but are rarely a problem. There are many types of bee in the UK.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

It could be a mason or leaf cutter bee. They are harmless. Mason bees don't even have a stinger. It's very unlikely to be a hornet. They are huge.

I've heard of leaf cutter bees nesting in baskets and pots, but l don't think they are particularly aggressive. Like @Fairygirl l can't see it in the photo?
Are they actually in the basket or just coming out from the flowers ?

Wool carder bees can be quite territorial but they're not aggressive as long as you're not a rival bee.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • There are two bees under the pot but I didn't want to get too close.

They have a waspy look about them,I wouldve said Mason Bees.
We had a hornets nest removed once and the man doing it said Hornets arent aggresive, but of course they are very noisy so you automatically think they are coming for you.
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
