Pruning advice for Robinia please :)

nfhaynesnfhaynes Posts: 4

Hi guys. I’m a novice gardener and planted this Robinia tree a few weeks back. Should I prune it? The bottom 2 little branches on the right? There’s also 2 larger branches on the left which have lots of leaves on but the branches appear to be a bit misshapen and are hanging downwards. I’d like to thicken it up but don’t want to hack at it without knowing what I’m doing 🙈.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

In my experience these are brittle trees whose branches break easily in strong winds so, for now, I would leave it alone but keep it well watered while it's getting its roots established.   It needs those leaves to photosynthesise and make energy to feed the growth.

I would save formative pruning for next spring after you've seen how it copes with winter frosts and gales and only then remove any dead or damaged stems and small, thin, spindly stems and maybe shorten others to balance it up.
