Good luck with them. The variety is also a determining feature. The cherry toms are generally more forgiving than the big varieties. I only grow the little ones. A bit of hardship is also better for toms. If they're too comfy, they're less keen to flower and set fruit. When they're slightly stressed, it forces them to try and reproduce more quickly. Which is the point of the exercise
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hi WG, they were going really well until we hit a really wet spell in early August, soon after the dreaded blight set in. Now I tend to stick to the greenhouse and have fantastic crops every year.
There will be an item on outdoor tomatoes on Beechgrove next week.
Have to say that, even here, I grow my tomatoes in the polytunnel to protect them from any blight. I did grow some outside 4 years ago and they did brilliantly but they were only there because I found a grower of heirloom varieties early in the season and bought loads, just in case my home sown seeds didn't work. They did.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

I'm not as far north but I have managed to grow a few in Gateshead. I probably could have had better results if I hadn't crowded two plants into a big pot.
I have been growing tomatoes and cucumbers outside and I wrap the at night as can see in pictures! I ensure there are airholes... I am West coast Scotland... 😎

I put some in pots outside last year and despite me totally neglecting them with watering and all that, they continued to fruit.
Yes, it's a town garden but it's exposed, too.
I'll defo report back.
