Planting after weedkiller

Round the border of my property I sowed Poppy seeds, mainly to stop weeds growing but what a sight it was . Anyway weeds all over the county , and the council decided to spray my Poppies with weedkiller.  Cant really grumble as I think technically it was on the public path , but I have some seeds and am hoping that they will give me an autumn showing as well as seeds for next year. How long after the spraying should I wait , it's already been 10 days ?

It depends which type of weedkiller they used.
Some, with glyphosate as the active ingredient, are slow acting so can take a couple of weeks or more to kill the weeds, whereas some are quicker-acting and the plants will die within a letter of a few hours, but they also contain a longer acting element which remains active for some months.

You could contact your local highways officer at the council ... he or she may know, or give you a contact who will know what was used.

Sometimes the council will ask you not to plant the verges etc, but sometimes, if you say you are happy to weed, plant and maintain a stretch of verge, they are happy for you to go ahead, within certain parameters, and they will instruct the sprayer to leave ‘your’ stretch.  Of course sometimes the spraying person doesn’t remember not to spray your stretch ... they can hardly be blamed, it must be a mind numbing job and remembering look out for your little patch in the many miles he has to attend to is asking a lot.
It may be a risk you’re happy to take.

  • Thanks @Dovefromabove I think they were only spraying due to catch up after covid , they definitely didn't spray last year as had poppies then. I think its glycophosphate as initially I "thought"  they had been sprayed but now I know.  Already contacted council they have logged a complaint when all I want to know is if they are coming back to clean up mess they have made . Bin day on weds so may well clean it up tomorrow regardless

If it’s just a straightforward glyphosate weedkiller it should be fine to replant after a couple of days.

  • The last time the council sprayed (which was quite a while ago!!!) they used the stuff that killed what was there and inhibited seeds from growing.
