Rose questions

Hi

I have a few questions about a rose.

1. Not sure if it’s a climber or rambler?
2. It has no flowers or buds, not sure why? (I cut in down in spring, because it has become a monster and was not being trained)
3. It has lots of lovely growth. I have put wires up on fence. Are there different rules for tieing in a rambler to a climber? (I have just shoved it behind the wires for now until I find out how to support it properly...)
4. Something has stripped a lot of the leaves. What is eating it and what should I do? Pics attached.

thanks so much 🌹

Thanks 🌻

As to your last question, that is large rose sawfly damage. The adults have bright orange bodies, you can squish them if you see them. They lay eggs in the stems and the larvae hatch and defoliate the rose like that. You can cut off the leaves you see with the larvae and put them somewhere for the birds to eat.

That looks like a rambler to me which means it won't flower till next year as they usually flower on stems made the previous year.   However, I also suspect that you have cut it back too far and removed the variety leaving just the rootstock which will never produce good flowers.

Maybe @Marlorena can help as she knows alot about all sorts of roses and their rootstocks.

Thanks Obelixx, to be honest it’s been in my garden for about 13 years and it’s a real thug. It wasn’t trained when we inherited it and I don’t really remember it ever flowering much if at all. Sometimes I have actually wondered if it’s a bramble or a weed!!

May be it’s time to dig it up and plant a new rose of my choice.

If it’s never going to flower then there is no point having it!!

thanks Oblelixx, I was feeling guilty about it, but now I don’t!!
    Thanks 🌻

In that case, cut it down but leave a stump you can grab whilst digging out the roots.  If you want to plant another rose you will need to replace the soil in that spot with fresh soil from another part of the garden in order to avoid rose re-plant problems.  Adding plenty of well-rotted manure to the soil will also help.
