Has anyone seen the effect of Verticillium wilt?  The yellow leaves appear throughout the plant and the brown/dead branches were random, and I don't appear to have wilting (or at lease not that I recognise as wilting). So I hope it's not that.
Would it be wise to get some Sulphate of Ammonia feed and use that for a while to see what effect that has?

When I was young we had a Laurustinus that was like a small tree that we could climb in; periodically got cut to the ground and then regrew. Have a small Laurustinus at the moment (one of Morrisons £2 shrubs and couple of years ago)

Just cut out the dead stuff @steveTu. It's probably just had a bit of damage at some point, causing the browning. They drop leaves at regular intervals too, and your dry weather is most likely the reason - it's been trying to preserve enough to maintain the top foliage, and create new growth.
Unless you can see any evidence of rot/browning etc at the base of it, that's the most likely scenario.

OK - the base looks ok with new growth. I've ordered some Sulphate anyway assuming that it's just food anyway and can't do any harm (unless I misapply it!) - and there must be other 'things' I can throw it on to make them grow.....

I suspect the shrub in the second photo could be a Forsythia shrub.

Thank you - I'll take a look at forsythia and see if it matches.

I've not seen a white Forsythia; you did say white flowers in Spring didn't you?

The 'forsythia' is the second  set of photos  on the first page. You had me worried for a bit as I'm old and  a bit senile and I thought I had said white instead of yellow when describing its flowers! It definitely has yellow flowers (I think!)....The laurustinus has white flowers...
