Sun dried tomatoes in uk?

CloggieCloggie Posts: 1,457
I'm thinking of experimenting with sun drying tomatoes this year in my stupidly hot conservatory (old stylee plastic roof jobby).  Anyone tried it?  Got any tips?

Far too many flies about here - cows and horses all round.  I did mine in the oven last year and the year before.  Delish.

But don't you have to leave the oven on for 8 hours?  I will try both methods, we are hoping for a bumper harvest so considering different options for storage since our freezer is full of raspberries! 😁

Might try apple leathers too?  Ever done that Ob?

The oven is left on low and yes it takes a long time but we have PV panels so it's OK here and they are delish.   No apples so no, never tried leather.

  • You can "moonblush" tomatoes a la Nigella and keep them in jars of olive oil for a low energy consumption alternative

I ‘slow roast’ mine in a very similar way to that @amancalledgeorge ... we bake all our own bread so I pop a trayful of tomatoes with EVOO and a little seasalt, (sometimes a sprinkling of herbs and a few cloves of garlic too) into the oven when I take the bread out, and I leave them there while the oven cools down. Then I pop them in small takeaway containers and freeze them ... taking one out and keeping it in the fridge to dip into as I use them up.
