apple tree splitting

Hello i have just noticed our apple tree main trunk has a long - about 2 ft straight -ish gash on the trunk.  The rest of the bark is fine. It is probably around 15 years old so not a young tree, I have found utube videos saying it is caused by sunstroke but we live in UK and hasnt been that hot although we have had a lot of rain. Can this be cured? is the tree now going to die/fall? any advice would be great in case we have to take and axe to it:(

Splitting like that tends to be environmental and very difficult to control. Excess swing in temperatures along with prolonged dryness followed by extreme wet. In some cases, the bark may even close up slowly.

Not too much you can do except keep an eye on it for possible entry wounds for bacteria etc. I don't think it is something you should worry too much for now, unless the split gets worse.
