I split a load of irises last year and planted them out in "The Allotment" to bulk up. We then had 2 weeks of rainy, cool weather so I didn't go look at them , but when I did , half of them were dead due to moles tunneling underneath and lifting them so the roots were in air in their tunnels. I have no love of them in the garden. They can have 4 acres down in the wood to play in.
Why not cut out the middle man, pour the vinegar down the holes. we've tried several different methods, baby windmills, bottles noisy Christmas cards, nothing seems to work. As of people saying you only have one per acre😀😀😀 although I’ve not heard that one for while.
My dad would plant out a long run of runner beans, next morning the whole row would be upturned.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Thanks for all your comments. I have asked the neighbour closest if he has seen any evidence of moles and he said that he had had mounds a couple of months ago but he has been rejigging his garden recently and hasn’t seen them since.....they’ve moved in with me evidently! The mounds currently skirt around my raised vegetable and fruit beds so I guess I may have problems later if I do nothing to discourage our visitor. We live right on the Malverns hills and the garden is a country one, not beautifully manicured so I’m not precious about the lawn if it moves on up the hill that is our back garden. It’s already got holes dug in it from our young dog who has a habit of thinking she’s helping when I’m not looking (sigh)... perhaps the mole would like to fill the holes back up for me! I’ll post some picks when I get a chance to dash out between the showers!
