Rose Training - Using a lateral as a main cane..

Hi there,

I watched a rose pruning/training video this morning which suggested that you can promote a lateral to act as a main cane if the main cane is damaged for example. Any thoughts? If so, would a lateral cane continue to lengthen if it's bloomed? I have just looked at a candidate on my rose for this but there appears to have been a terminal bud on the end of the lateral which I must've deadheaded earlier in the year.. Does that mean that lateral is now 'stopped' or will it continue to lengthen beyond this? Sorry, bit hard to explain. I hope it makes sense!

Thanks in advance.
