How can I tell if this is bracken?

    I don't think that's bracken. Having waded through plenty of it in my time, once it's reached any size, it's quite distinctive. 
    It's very sturdy in it's habit, with a 'tiered look' when you see a huge stand of it in all its glory, at about five feet tall  ;)

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Not Bracken. Hre in the moor valley woodland and meadow the bracken is 3-5ft

    Also, I think Bracken is tougher to the touch than fern.  Almost crackly!!
    A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

    Might be Dryopteris cristata - Crested Buckler Fern
