Conifer hedge suffers heavy pruning -advice please

Hi folks, hoping someone can help with this, out neighbour cut our boundary hedge to about half its height. I’m concerned that the top won’t green over. What’s your thoughts please ?

Most conifers don't re-grow from brown wood. There are a couple of exceptions - Yew, and (I think) Thuja. If it's leylandii then you're stuck with the brown top.

Does the hedge belong to you or to your neighbour, and how well do you get on with them? If it's theirs, there's nothing much you can do except keeping your side trimmed. If the green growth heads upwards from the side you could let it get a bit taller. If it's yours the neighbour shouldn't have cut back past the boundary, but done is done and it's not worth falling out over. You could take it out and replace it if you like. Maybe they'd help if you get on well and if you explain that the top isn't going to grow back.

Dig it up, improve the soil with well-rotted manure and garden compost and plant something attractive and good for wildlife too.

  • Leylandii grows 3 feet per year, so by the end of summer the side growth will cover the top.
But if it was mine I would take it out and plant something nice instead.
