Orchid

WhippetWhippet Posts: 145
Four years ago my husband bought an 'outdoor Orchid' although exactly what type I have no idea. He was told it could stay outside all year round, wouldnt mind the cold and would give beautiful flowers.
It lived in a hanging basket, had loads of leaves but no flowers and didnt seem to mind the winter.
It is now in bits because last year when we moved house it was transferred to a large tub where it still had loads of leaves but no flowers so because the tub was being 'wasted' I took it out and broke it into smaller pieces.
The larger ones are as they were with a new leaf at the base and 6 of 8 small pieces are also growing albeit extremely slowly.
I dislike Orchids but husband thinks them beautiful so Id like to keep at least one going but know nothing about growing them.
They are in individual pots of compost sitting outside in a sheltered spot with afternoon sunshine for a couple of hours.
I assume they need something better to grow in...special compost?
Although I dont like the idea of throwing away living plants I am heartily fed up looking at these things!  :)

  • The term outdoor orchid worries me, if you're based in the UK. Can you add a photo so we get a better ideal of what the plant looks like?

Sorry for the delay.  Here they are.
  • Thanks @Whippet looks to me like an Oncidium orchid...which explains they just survived outdoors but not thrived. The RHS has some detailed propagation advice on this page: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=334

Odd the advice they gave at point of purchase...mist people would grow them in a conservatory or cool bright room.

Thankyou very much for identifying it and for the link.
First job is to bring them in then. We have a sunroom so will take some in there and the others into my greenhouse.
Will be surrounded by the blessed things now!   :D
  • Ha!ha! Good luck with them...do love them but can be so demanding at times 😉
