I have discovered a useful new garden tool.

My wife bought one of those blow-torch things for crisping her lasagna. She was a bit put out when I discovered it was very useful for zapping some tree seedlings that were invasive. I put a metal shield round the plant destined for oblivion to protect anything growing nearby and then Kepow! Give it a try.

Drastic, lol. At the risk of being sexist this sounds like such a man thing.  :D

if they're so small a tiny blow torch kills them, surely they're easily dug up? Just  a thought

Dual purpose, very eco.  Just make sure you’ve cleaned it properly before your wife uses it to brown the lasagne or brûlée’s the creme.😂

Used properly I find an oven is fine for browning the top of a lasagna and a hand, with or without a trowel or hand fork, works fine for pulling weeds, be they baby trees or not.  Certainly less faff than a collar and blowtorch and no greenhouse gases.

According to the instructions which came with my gas powered weeder, you shouldn't incinerate the weeds but just heat up the leaves to the point that they 'boil'. When we were living in France we had a huge drive (wide enough for large delivery vans to do a 3 point turn) which needed regular weeding. The flame gun worked extremely well. It came back to the UK but has had little or no use here. It's far simpler to weed by hand, and it has its own integral collar.
