Strawberry Tree

I have a large old strawberry tree. It takes up a lot of light and I wondered if iy was poodle to cut it right back without killing it? I was hoping it might slowly grow back from the trunks left if we cut it

I cannot see any problems with a severe pruning as they normally regenerate well .
This is normally done in the Spring though ; if done now , any growth may not be sufficiently 'hardened-off' to withstand any early Autumn frosts we may see .
If mine I'd be tempted to wait until next year .

Arbutus fall in the group 1 catagory for pruning, which implies minimal pruning.  However as Paul says.  They normally regenerate well.  No doubt as the tree in question is 'old' it no doubt has a fair amount of dead or unwanted branches, so perhaps it would be best to clear this first.

There does appear the tendancy for large areas of trunk remaining bare.  In the park opposite my home, there is such a tree.  The side facing the road is completely bare, this makes the tree stand out.  During the past 60 yrs, the only attention it has been given is the removal of a damaged ( by child climbers) that the council totally removed.  The fruits, resemble minature strawberries.  These can be used for jam making.
