Repotting christmas cactus

I have a well-developed Christmas cactus that has endured some puppy damage (leaves bitten off or chewed) and was quite brown.  Thought it was dying... however seems to be reviving with some careful watering thankfully.  
Can someone advise me how best to feed it and, as I feel repotting is overdue, what sort of compost? Sandy? Gritty? I don't have either but can now go out and buy....

    It needs cactus compost or an amended loam based compost.

    Thanks very much George!I don't know why I didn't think to look at RHS.  The local garden centre was out of cactus compost yesterday but I bought some sharp sand, mixed it with my all-purpose compost.  I can't believe how quickly those brown stems/leaves have disappeared! The plant is looking so happy already.  I have messaged my green-fingered mother-in-law who gave me the plant several years ago.   Thanks again  :D
