What's been eating my dahlia?

Haven't noticed stem damage like this on a plant before-



Thankfully looks old and the stem is flowering now.

    Is that normal slug damage? Have never noticed the stems suffer before and certainly not at that sort of height.

    That looks to me more as if a leaf of shoot has been ripped off ... and it looks as if some other leaves have been ripped too ... any woodpigeons in your garden?  They’ll take almost any young green leaves that take their fancy.
