Pruning cistus

I have a very overgrown cistus which I would like to make much smaller by cutting back about half the growth. Will it survive a brutal chop?

Avoid pruning your Cistus back in to old wood as they don’t respond well from hard pruning. You could try cutting back to green growth, perhaps where the new growth is starting to become woodier?
  • Thanks I think you're right. Now it's finished flowering I've sort of clipped it back underneath the canopy (it had killed off the lawn so I put some new turf there) Still a large bush, shaped a bit like a parasol. Doesn't look to bad. I'll clip some of the top growth in the Spring.
