Hydrangea trouble

I have successfully grown hydrangeas for many years they have always flowered and been no trouble however this year they have been a disaster. They started with brown curly leaves and now all the new growth is being eaten by something. I have resorted to bug clear (not something I normally use) but it doesn't seem to deter whatever is eating them. Can anyone advise please
