Odd line of holes in my canna leaves

Some of my canna leaves have a series of holes across the width of a leaf. I can't work out if this is something eating them or some form of odd disease or somehow weather related. Any ideas?

Something chews it (proabably a snail) while it is still curled up. At that point the snail rasps a large hole, then when it grows and unfurls, that is what you get.

I do have a lot of snails which I don't seem to be doing well to deter! I liked the caterpillar theory and illustrations K67!

You see the same sort of pattern, if a Hosta leaf gets slugged / snailed, when it is stilled rolled up.

I now need to decide how to deal with the pesky slugs! I have tried collecting and moving elsewhere but I don't think this is working as loads of my plants have been eaten! I don't like pellets as I'm afraid my cat and neighbours' cats will eat them. My cat will eat anything he thinks could be food!
