Can you attach a photo, and if possible, show us if it's in a pot or in the ground?  Details of it's position (sun/shade/windy/sheltered), would also be helpful.

    Sun and wind damage.

Best option - plant in the ground in a shady, sheltered spot (but don’t move till it is dormant)
Next best option - move the pot to a shady, sheltered spot.

It also might need a bigger pot in the near future.  A special Acer feed every week wouldn’t do any harm.

No, don't cut any leaves off. Move it to a more sheltered spot and it should be fine.

If you are intending to plant it in the ground at some point, as it is potted, you could do it now, especially if your weather is the same as mine, wet and warm! I have acers which have stood up to all sorts of abuse - started one in a pot, suffered from drought and lost all leaves and the bark wrinkled, planted in the ground but the huge hole acted as a sump which flooded with water during the winter, a hands depth up the trunk, new growth eaten by deer, regrew, dug up without any soil (in November) transported 700 miles in a plastic carrier bag and now looks great in another pot! The red leaved varieties do seem prone to wind and sun damage and they do prefer a bit of shade. If you do choose to keep it in a pot, it needs to be in one which is as big as possible. Pots also need regular watering too.

Apologies for bobbing in, but if I may ask, @KeenOnGreen could you clarify what a 'special Acer feed' is please? do you mean ericacious food? I know some people say seaweed food is good for Acers but i thought the general thought was they didn't need feeding? I only ask because I too have potted Acers and was wondering what to give them. many thanks
