Carrots... to thin or not to thin...

We have planted a few rows of "resistafly" carrots in a pallet-collar (2 deep) raised bed at our allotment. We're first-time growers of any carrots.

The tops are starting to really shoot up and am reading lots of contradicting guidance as to when/whether/how to thin them out.

Any experts care to offer some advice based on this pic? Pardon the weeds - taken just before we had a clear up. For an idea of space the length of the bed is 1.2m and it's 0.8em wide.

Thanks,

Steve

Current spacing looks fine to me.  Just check for any clumps of seedlings close together and thin those.

Thanks Bob - every day is a learning day since taking on the allotment. :)

I always pull the largest from each clump and eat them - so flavoursome! - and leave the others to get bigger.

And you can try replanting the pulled ones into any larger spaces you may have. I just make a hole with a narrow stick and drop them in, then gently water.

  • If you want to thin without disturbing the other plants cut the unwanted ones off at ground level with a sharp scissors it avoids root disturbance.
  • At first sight, it looks good to me.  If some of them are really close to each other, I think, it will be better to get rid of the weakest.
