Frogs and toads in garden!

Hi everyone! I recently moved into my new house and the garden was really overgrown and neglected, it’s much better now and I’m really proud of it but while it looks move now, the overgrown slightly wild condition was perfect for frogs and toads and I’ve found a few during my gardening and I’m concerned I’ve ruined their nesting spots by having new fencing and planting etc! I’ve tried to create frog and toad friendly places in the garden like making small ponds and ‘frog and toad houses’ with some piles of vegetation but I’m concerned they’ve fled and I would love them to come back and help with natural pest control for my veggies! Any ideas on how to attract them back to the garden? Thanks!

Some overgrown areas will be appreciated. The UK Common Frog used to be referred to as the 'Grass Frog' it is surprising how many can be found in long unmown grass in late summer and Autumn.

The main thing is cover and hiding places and some form of provision for their preferred food, a compost heap in one corner of the garden would be great. In time the balance will come where they protect the veg, had that happy balance here for most of the last 10 years.

I recommend making some holes in your fencing so toads, hedgehogs etc can travel. It is good to leave some areas and grass overgrown.

I have toads/frogs in my front and back gardens. In the front garden, they live in the hedge. Round the back, one lives amongst my (work in progress) rockery. I will tell you this. I am petrified of frogs/toads and the one that lives in the rockery likes to follow me around when I am gardening. It is often like a game of hide and seek. I am the finder which often results in screams, jumps and walking at pase into another area of the garden.

My neighbours find this highly amusing

Welcome to the forum by the way
  • Thank you! The thought of you running away from all the little frogs/toads while you’re gardening made me laugh! Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Aren't frogs and toads the most amazing things ever? I love them.
