Oh dear! That looks as though they've been burnt by the sun but the good leaves should be fine to eat.

It's called tip burn. The roots most likely dried out. Give them a good soaking, unaffected leaves should be fine.

It's best not to let lettuce dry out completely. Possibly your spacing is a little close together, which would not have helped with them having enough water and air flow around the plants.

It's not drastic, you can carefully remove any badly damaged bits, you'll still have lettuce to eat!

Thank you Gemma, Its the first time I've grown anything so a steep learning curve for me!!! ... I did wonder if they were too close together as the bigger theyve got it was looking a bit crowded!! I just didnt want to eat them if they were dangerous to eat didnt know if they were diseased ... also what about slugs and snails do they leave anything dangerous on the plants?? You can tell I'm new to this cant you!?!?

Slugs and snails? You need to encourage some slow worms to live in your garden  :)

In the UK slugs and snails pose no risk at all to humans. Simply rinse your home grown veg well with cold water.

We were all new to it once! I still learn new things all the time.

Can you thin them out to 6” apart you may be able to transplant them into another container. They need room to grow.
