Tiny white flies in the compost of seed tray

Does anyone know what these are and what to do about it? These insects are so miniscule! But when the compost is moved you can see them  :o I don't understand how they even got there, since the seed tray has been covered by a plastic bag this whole time and it's kept indoors? Unless the insects are in the compost (which is store bought)?

Are they thrips?  Look them up to see if the description makes sense to you.
  • @Cloggie possibly! Do you know how to get rid of them? Or should I just switch out the compost/throw the seed tray away?

Maybe springtails? You might need a magnifying glass or macro camera lens to find out for sure.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • @wild edges I see. Do you think I should throw it away ?

Do your plants seem affected?  If not, I would just keep going with it.  Maybe put up a yellow sticky trap?

  • @Blue Onion no they don't but they're only little seedlings yet. I will have to look into that, thank you  :)
