A white verison of this is growing all over the place in my mother's not terribly well tended garden in Sheffield, and we had the pink version growing in odd places in our garden - here, horizontally out of a wall!  Can someone identify it for me? Google suggest it's valerian/centranthus ruber.

It is valerian. Comes in pink and white too
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Yes, it is, comes in red & white, can be a bit of a nuisance seeding around  I believe, but it gave up the ghost here, so no personal experience :)

It's  name is Centranthus commonly known as Valerian. Not actually the herb valerian which looks rather different. I'm wondering how it got to be known as valerian when it isn't. No explaining these things I suppose.  :/

So do I ... but I try to deadhead most of ours so not a lot of the the seeds drift into our neighbours' gardens.  :)

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

I've seen too much of it when I was a child, literally surrounded by it and it smells when it begins to die down. On the plus side, it does look good grown in some situations like on a stone wall etc.

An ancient abbey wall near us has a row of it along the top and it looks wonderful as i drive past (too far away for it to be a nuisance to my garden).
