Meadow seed

I'm looking to start a meadow area. I'll need to buy some meadow seed as it is a big area. Can someone recommend a reliable, reputable and sustainable source?

How big is big, if it’s really large you will have a wider choice of suppliers. You only need a very small amount per square meter so for your average domestic garden there aren’t very many suppliers to choose from.

Chiltern seeds have various meadow mixes, I haven’t tried them yet (I have a packet of their woodland mix we will be  sowing later this year) but they are a good supplier and I have always found their seeds reliable. Having said that do be aware that native flowers are notoriously unreliable re germination rates and some seeds may not germinate for a very long time, just nature not the supplier.

    Around 300 m2
  • I assume perennial meadow rather than annual meadow? Any chance you can get machinery in there to till the soil? I did a similar sized area and I got a farming friend to do the ground prep and then we sowed in spring. That was 8 years ago, before the recent succession of hot, dry springs. I would now sow in autumn if I was doing it again.

I can't remember where we got the seed from but I would choose a supplier according to your site, soil and seed mix you want. If your soil is fertile, I would include yellow rattle to weaken the more vigorous grasses.

Yes perennial for sure. I'm hoping someone can help me with a supplier of seeds for the autumn. And yes, we are next to a farm so going to ask him to help me prepare the soil.
