@JennyJ I empty my Hoover contents into my compost bin. It does seem to rot down. I turn my heap though so it could be the mixing that helps it
Considering 40% of that is human shed skin cells, it's certainly mostly compostable.   What keeps me from doing the same is all the synthetic particles and micro-plastics also in the Hoover bag.  Unless you have 100% wool or cotton carpets.. you're adding plastic to the environment

I compost my two boys’ and husband’s hair from their bi-monthly haircuts.. and now mine since I've been cutting my own hair in lock-down as well.  Usually direct into my veg plot down the vole holes to make them irritated and itchy.

Where I have carpet they're mostly wool and I think the fibres that come out are the wool (burn test - synthetics melt, cotton burns, wool smells like burnt hair) . A high proportion of our vacuum contents is cat hair which can't be all that different from human hair when it comes to composting.
