Help please with plant I.D.

Complete beginner here, dabbling for the first time with a raised vegetable bed. All seems to be going ok so far with the few varieties I’ve planted, and I’m very much enjoying it.

A couple of months ago I was given a small tray of assorted seedlings by a kind acquaintance, who told me to try them out and see which ones worked best for me, to help with planning a more coherent patch next year.  I managed to remember what he said most of them were, and labelled them accordingly when I planted them out, but I had completely forgotten what this one is. Can anyone help identify it?

Also, I’ve recently noticed that some of the lower leaves have begun to turn black, so I wonder if there’s something going wrong with it, whatever it is?

Many thanks,

Jonny

I think it might be rocket which has bolted, I'm not certain. If it is then it's now gone over and wants pulling out. Think others maybe able to help

I wonder if it might be one of the mustards?  I have something rather like that, with similar purple veins, in my mixed salad leaves.  (They're supposed to be that colour!)  Mine is also going up to flower... if it's just in bud, the flowering shoot is still edible, but once it opens the stem and leaves become tough and stringy.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Mizuna? If it’s flowering, it means it’s bolted so need pulling up. You could try a few leaves and see if they are still edible.

  • Thanks very much everyone for all the suggestions. Whatever it was it’s gone on the compost heap, and won’t make the shortlist for next year’s planting!
