I would say either ericaceous or John innes no 3. Maybe half and half. They dont strictly have to have acid soil but they don't like very chalky alkaline soil. Do you know what type of soil you have?

Also a protected and at least dappled shade area, some acers cope better with sun and some not at all. But they don't like windy places at all. That's the problem I've having with mine since I moved here 4 years back. They came with us in pots.

A lot depends on the variety of acer you are planting too.

Hi there was thinking of Getting a platinum Nathen acer for my border near my garage it’s gets some sun and shade there during the day so I will have to work the compost with the soil I’m filling the whole with just like any plant

I looked it up and could only find Acer Palmatum 'Nathan' so I assume that's the right one. It's quite a small one so as long as I you can give it protection from wind and some shade then I think it will be fine. J I 3 is normally used for trees and shrubs.

Root grow is a good idea. As you are using new compost and acer food I wouldnt worry about the bone meal.
