It's a combination of factors @Daffodil59. Enough moisture, but good drainage, late sun and out of cold/hot drying winds. A slow release food, or some liquid seaweed, is beneficial, but the right sort of growing medium to start with is important. If yours are in pots, you can always move them to get the best site. In the ground it's a little more difficult. You can use all the right food, have other planting to give some shade , and add layers of mulch each year etc, but you can't alter your local climate and conditions, so you have to work with those as best you can
