Portuguese laurel help

Hi everyone, I've just planted some Portuguese laurel about 1 week ago do I need to trim them to make it into a hedge. Or should I just let them grow. Will attach some pictures.

    You need to get spread first, one they’ve got leggy it’s a harder job to get them bushy.

    Hope they have enough space to grow sideways too...they look quite close to that fence.
