Is my silver birch tree dying?

Large branches have been falling from our silver birch and we have had a couple of near misses in the garden.  The tree is mature with dark areas on the white bark and a knot on one side, although we don't know its exact age.  Is this loss of branches a sign the tree is struggling?  What can we do to help it if so?  I am not sure if it is usual for silver birch to lose their branches like this.  Thanks for any advice.

Sorry but when a tree starts to shed its branches.  Then its, lights out.  Goodnight Veinna.

I would call in a specialist to have a look, if that were possible. It doesn't sound good, but there have been several big storms with very high winds this year, haven't there? Could they have caused damage?
  • Thanks for your comments.  The branches weren't damaged in the storms.  I have been taking a closer look and can see that there are some branches without any leaves at all, although the majority still do have leaves.  Maybe it is nearing the end of its life now.  I will have a google and see what I can do to help it thrive.

Is there something going round with Silver Birch. My neighbours died last year and this year all three of mine, 40ft min, just didn't develop any leaves after the winter and now seem dead as some do do's. Nearby Ash, Sycamore, Scot's Pine & Oak are all fine.
    Luv Dave
