Teasels. Biennial; these rosettes will overwinter and next year they will throw up flowering stalks up to six feet tall. The flowers are good for pollinators, and the seeds are said to be good for birds, particularly goldfinches. I say "said to be", because a couple of years ago I grew teasels purposely for the goldfinches, and they studiously ignored them. The seeds found their way all over the garden, with the result, well you can see for yourself. Pull them out if you don't fancy them.
Thank you both. Spot on. I grew teasels for the birds for a couple of years - but no interest from them. It has obviously self seeded well and I wont be needing 50 of them Thanks for your help. I should have realised from the leaf - just didn't make the connection.
