Help to ID tree and seedlings growing on lawn

Hey folks, first time post here and a gardening newbie but love doing what I can in the garden.

I just need some help ID'ing the tree in the photos as I'm starting to notice little sprouts coming up from the lawn which I imagine is from the tree above dropping it's seeds - photos also attached.

I've seen from previous posts on similar subjects that the best way to deal with this is regular mowing or by picking them out by hand - is that the case here as well?

Many thanks

P.s I can take more photos if required...it was just raining so I was quick ha

  • Hi  - that's an Ash tree, I'm not sure about the seedlings. Tree seedlings won't survive your normal mowing.
  • Great, thank you Stephen!

Can't recognise the seedling, though it looks very familiar. It's not a tree seedling

    In the sticks near Peterborough

Ah interesting, I presumed it would be as there are quite a few dotted around the lawn that is under the tree

Grass seedling is ground elder - I know it all too well!
  • Ahh bugger! Just googled that....yay!

Thanks for info though, much appreciated!

If you haven't got any established plants, or only a few, it's not too hard to keep on top of. Just dig out every plant (don't pull) making sure you have got every bit of white root.
I have a very large garden, way to big for me, and loads of ground elder. I have to accept that it will always be there and just keep it out of the borders where I can.
It's a wild garden with lots of wild flowers and so it doesn't stand out too much. The flowers are pretty and it makes good ground cover and I would happily let it grow if it only knew when to stop!
  • Oh thank you for the detailed response 🙂 the thing is it seems to be mainly growing within the grass at the moment so I don't really want to be digging that up as it's looking quite nice at the moment.

I'm happy enough to just go around and pick out the ones that are sprouting as it's a small area but I do understand that this will not get rid of them and they will come back so maybe that's abit pointless. I'll do abit of research as it seems to be a problem alot of people have 🙂

At least mowing it will stop it getting to flowering size, but keep an eye out for escapees around the edges!
