Oh well that's very different ... yew really responds brilliantly to hard pruning ... I've seen large yew trees (20-30ft) in a churchyard cut back to 6ft ... just bare trunks ... within a few years they were up and green all over and growing beautifully ... that was about 15 years ago ... now they're just as bit as they ever were Yew is marvellous.

As @Dovefromabove says - Thuja isn't a problem, which is why it makes a good hedge. Next door has one, and it only needs a wee trim once a year or so. It's about 6 or 7 feet, but it can't be much more than a foot in depth. Yew is great for 'pruning' which is why it's also used for topiary so often.

@Fairygirl - she is quite happy to let her neighbours shoulder the cost of maintaining her garden...that is how we come to the situation where we may have to spend £400 to get her tree cut down. One neighbour has been doing it for years apparently on the other side and it has cost a fortune - but she at least has some sun in her garden now...I don't want to be going down that route and setting any precedent that we will put our hands in our pockets to sort out any nuisance that her negligence of her garden is causing though...tricky one really.
Well, as long as she knows she'll be liable for any damage you incur should it crash down on your house or garden ... your insurance company may well sue her.

Emma that is the kind of view we have, ugly tall firs, not been touched in 10 years, all dead at the bottom. We do lop off the bits overhanging our veg plot.
