dead newt in pond

At the start of lockdown we re-vamped our pond as it was leaking. There were a couple of newts in there that I managed to keep, now there are over 12, however today I've just found one on its back, and it had turned up its toes. I'm just wondering what the reason could be? I only have one plant in it as yet as the garden centres have only recently opened so its on the list of things to get. Any help please will be grateful.
thanks
Jill

If it is just the one, possibly an exhausted female that simply reached the end of her life? They have a lot of work to do laying hundreds of individual eggs. They like plants for egg laying, though don't need them for oxygen, they can gulp air at the surface of the pond.

Thank you Gemma for your reassurance I was worried it may be a disease and I might have to redo the pond again  :o. I'll keep an eye on them, I just hope we get some frogs soon as the gkids love watching them.
