Can anyone identify this skull?

Found this small skull in my friends garden this morning.Thought at first it was from a bird but I see it has teeth at the back of the jaw so now thinking maybe a rat?
Roughly 2.5 inches long.

    Those are teeth for grinding vegetable matter, so rabbit.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    If it is a pet it is a very old one,my friend has lived in the house for 22 years and my Mum lived there for 10 years,the people before that were not rabbit keeping types!
    Maybe it is one that wandered in from somewhere?
    I know there was a pet place in a nursery just down the road and they have had some escapees from time to time.I once saw a gerbil run across my Mum's drive!!
