Can you take cuttings from mature Dahlia (with no new growth from tuber)?

I have a dahlia which a friend has admired and asked for a cutting. Since it looks nothing like the plant I ordered from Sarah Raven,  I can’t tell her what to buy. Last year I tried to take cuttings from new shoots off a dahlias main stem. With and without rooting powder, was careful not to try to plant hollow stems... Still, no joy. Is it even possible? TIA 😬

    Unless you have a new shoot at the bottom , joined to a bit of tuber, it is too late this year. When you dig it up after the frosts kill the tops off, you may find it will split easily into two or three.

    I would say you've got little to lose by trying. Remove a few small tips and pot them up, put them in a shady spot and keep moist. I did just that last year and it actually worked for me.

    If I recall correctly the cuttings initially took, but sadly got wilt and died after a month. Don’t be put off though, give it a go. I often kill with kindness i.e. overwater, so it was probably that :)
