Plant to suit a shady corner please

SammymummySammymummy Posts: 202
Hi

I have a shady corner in my sunny border. It is shady because of a Salix Flamingo and also Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ blocking light. It is about 80cm x 90cm. I think, in autumn, I will move Sedum to the back and plant something else in front, but I am not sure Sedum will be happy there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

No wonder with your name, @Hostafan1 😂 - I don’t think I can deal with more slugs and snails but I will keep that in mind. Do you think Sedum will be happy to take a back seat?

I grow sedums in my front garden in quite a bit of shade, but they get some sun in late afternoon.
There are lots of plants which will suit. It isn't a very big space though. I'm assuming it's fairly dry in there. Euphorbias will be fine, but you could also plant something like a clematis - the alpinas and macropetalas, and several others, like a drier spot.
There are lots of ferns which like drier shade.
If it's damper, Dicentra will do well. Heucheras and their relations too, and Polemoniums and hardy Geraniums. All of those will cope with drier conditions too once established. Astilbes are great for damp areas.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • we have a shaded border. It’s a fun project if I’m honest! We have 2 big buddleia, a hydrangeas, a few heuchera, a few euonymus, geraniums, ajuga reptans, Jack Frost, buxus bush, acer amongst a few other things!
