Just had sloping garden levelled

Hi all

I have just had my garden levelled. It had a significant slope which made it unusable for my family. We had to have a retaining wall and new back fencing to retain the weight of the excess soil and hardcore/rubble. We have a man hole which was also built up which was at the lowest part of our garden. Does anyone know how long I will have to leave it for it to settle. There was loads of rubble/hardcore put down initially then just mud and then topsoil?

Any help would be appreciated as I was hoping to have it lawned asap.

Cheers

Rob

If the rubble and hardcore was well compacted with a Wacker plate it won't settle much more, perhaps a small bit with the topsoil.  I don't see a reason why you can't turf it now just make sure your prep is good.

Assuming that you had it done by professionals,  perhaps they might be able to give you guidance as they will know more about the properties of the materials used?

    Hi

The guys advised a couple of months but he didn't sound convincing saying that it would settle faster with a few downpours. They used a wacker  packer on it but the rubble/hardcore was just brick and ornaments and smashed up concrete slabs, so I don't think the hardcore was great to be honest. I'm going to use a 2x3 slab to go compacting it every night for a couple of weeks, hoping that it will speed it up!!

    Thanks for your help.

If you want a good flat lawn, unfortunately it is two to three months settling that is the standard time recommended. Otherwise it will settle and the lawn will become bumpy.

It's not a great time put down turf or start the lawn from seed right now, it would be much better (as in easier to get established) in cooler wetter weather in September.

So if you can wait that long, it has several benefits.

Brick and rubble won't settle much, that's what a lot of farmer use for bottoming at there gates for entry to their fields.  I do agree a few downpours will definitely aid in settling with the topsoil
