Thought I’d planted rosemary...

No idea what this is. Thought I’d taken some seeds from a Johnson’s seed packet and even put the little marker in the pot.

I’m no fantastic gardener but I’m pretty sure this isn’t the rosemary I thought I’d planted.

Before I pull it all up, can anybody identify it for me in case it’s worth keeping please? It’s certainly growing like a weed....

Willow herb; easy to uproot.  Safe to compost as long as it hasn't set seed.  It might be easier to grow rosemary from cuttings, if you know anyone who can give you some from theirs.

It looks like a weed because that's what it is. It might be a type of willow herb. Its Epilobum hirsutum, a willow herb. Get rid of it. This is easily spread so it might have set itself from seed or if you used old compost or garden soil it might have been in that. I've never grown rosemary from seed as it is easy to propagate from cuttings. I would think that it was slow to grow, which is a factor which would have given your weed chance to grow before the seed germinated.

Fantastic, thank you. Clearly not rosemary, no idea what happened to that!!

I’ll get it out and replaced with something useful!

It's slow from seed. We sowed thyme, sage, basil, mint and rosemary all on the same day, the first 4 have filled the pots already, I think we have a total of 5 rosemary seedlings so far.

Planted a rosemary plant earlier this year too and that has grown very little too so that would make sense if they grow that slowly. I guess the Willow Herb completely suppressed any rosemary growth.

Oh well, got some lemon grass going nuts in the kitchen that can go there. Didn’t appreciate quite how big that could get.

    Thanks again

Keep an eye out in the supermarket (if you still go to one) as all their fresh herbs have a sell by date and quite often rosemary in a pot is sold off for 10p when the date is up. I get all my plants that way.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
