Rose ‘sweet honey’ needs a bit of TLC

AllyblueeyesAllyblueeyes Posts: 420
Morning everyone.  I went to the GC this morning to get some herbs and was promptly drawn to a slightly sickly looking rose.  I knew I had to buy it 🙄 but now need advice on how to get it back to good health.  The pictures make it look better than it is and I managed to leave all the dead and broken leaves and stems at the GC!  Does it just need a good soak and feed (I’ve got fish blood and bone and Top Rose) or is there anything else I can do to help it along.  There is some new growth so 🤞. Apologies if it’s silly question but I’m fairly  new to roses .... but completely addicted. Thanks in advance.

The light is a bit better now so probably a better picture.

Sweet Honey is a beautiful rose. Are you planning on putting it in a pot or planting it out?

Good morning @Omori. I’m definitely planting it out.  I’ve got a gap in a very sunny position and it’ll go alongside other roses, Rushing Stream, Golden Wings and Rosy Cushion.  It’s a pretty little rose isn’t it?  Just want to give it a bit of a lift!

It looks to have some nice sturdy canes on it, and new growth, I would just give that cane you can see in the last photo that has some die back a clean cut just back to the green, and any others like that. You could remove the leaves at the bottom that are a bit worse for wear if you want. Other than that I would just plant it as usual, but you could give it a seaweed tonic drench for a boost if you have it. I have Top Rose as well, it's getting to be time for roses second annual feeding in a week or so, you could give it a feed when you feed your other roses?

Just one other thought...When it comes time to deadhead the flower it has, you could bring it back in line with the rest of the canes to give it a more rounded look if you like.

You have a beautiful garden! I'm sure it will flourish for you. I hope that wasn't too much information, I tend to overdo it  :D

@Omori .... thank you so much!  You can never give me too much information.  I love my garden and especially my new found love of roses.  Been gardening a long time but would never consider myself a gardener!  Learning all the time, thanks to people like you!  I will do all as you suggest and will post another pic when it’s been planted and is once again looking like it should!  🤞 Thanks again ... very much! 🌷
