Glad your mum is pleased with your gardening ... if you’ll excuse the familiarity, ((hugs)) to you ... been there and done that one. Not an easy row to hoe. Take care of yourself too.

Hi folks,I'm new to gardening and planted 12 plants today around the garden, having looked on the internet tonight I noticed that I have made an error and not broken the rootball when planting any of them,I planted Hostas,Hydrangeas an Escallona pink Elle amongst others,I'm so annoyed with myself,I wish it had said that on the label for first timers like me.
Will it be ok and adsvisable for me to gently pull the plants out tomorrow and break the ball root and if so what is the easiest way to break the balls root?
In all honesty, I've never done this and all our plants seem to flourish 🤷♂️

Hi she did enjoy the plants,I regret that I hadn't done this many years ago for my mum,but at least I got there in the end,oh and thanks for the virtual hug.I haven't got many people to speak to as I'm at home all day every day besides shopping trips and mum doesn't say a lot now, life has changed a lot over the last 3-4 years. My son used to live with me half of the time with mum,but I've only seen him twice in the garden over the last 3 months when he popped to ours for lunch, due to the covid situation.I'm so looking forward to him seeing the finsished garden, which I hope to complete in 2 to 3 weeks

I shall have a look at that tonight, thanks for letting me know about that thread
@Richard.jones89 - but it depends on the condition of the plant you're planting. I rarely have to do it either, but plants that have been languishing in pots for too long, or ones which have been neglected, are often in poor condition and pot bound - shrubs and trees in particular. If that's the case, they need a bit of teasing out, and thorough watering when being planted. We've had many people on the forum in the past querying why their plants haven't been thriving. Despite everything else being attended to thoroughly, the roots have been going round and round the pot they've been in, and they've never moved out into their surroundings. They dig them out and can see that's what's happened. Usually, a bit of remedial attention, and they grow away properly:)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
