Help! Dying acer?

I have a 12 year old acer in a partially shady corner of my garden. It enjoys a sheltered position. The tree is about 12 foot high and 7 foot across. It has always been exceptionally healthy. Over the past few weeks leave on whole branches have shrivelled and died. Initially we removed the affected branch, thinking there might be some infection responsible, even though there was no obvious visible sign. However, as soon as one branch is removed another becomes affected. It has been very dry here but we have been watering the tree. Help! Any ideas?

We have a similar problem. One of our acers, a red leafed variety, over twenty years old and slightly bigger than yours, came into leaf this spring as usual. A couple of weeks ago, we noticed that all the leaves had shrivelled and fallen off. I was hoping it was just a reaction to the late cold snap, and then the heatwave, and that it might recover, so we haven’t done anything to it. Will be interested to see what suggestions any experienced gardeners might have. Leave it alone and hope, or assume the worst?

It sounds very similar...our too is a red leaved variety. I think I’ll take a more conservative approach as you’ve done until I know more. I’m so hoping someone has ideas. I’m really fond of it!

One of my acers has shrivelled over the last couple Of weeks too. I’m hoping it’s the weather and am just playing the wait and see game right now
