Blocking neighbours noise

Hi. As someone who works for a Council can I reassure you that all neighbour complaints are confidential and would not be disclosed to a third party - heck of a GDPR fine if it was. Also when selling a house the environmental search is only in relation to the property being sold re  outstanding notices served, not a search on the neighbours. So in reality it’s up to you and your conscience if you disclose.

Interestingly @Treeface, this came up a while ago on the forum, and someone said that, in reality, it never really happens, so it's one of those 'not quite an urban myth or is it?' type of problems. It seems that it doesn't always get recorded or disclosed.
I don't know if that's UK wide either though.

I wouldn't want to take the risk either though!

My understanding is that a legal dispute with a neighbour would have to be reported, but I'm not sure a noise complaint to the council would fall under that.  Strictly speaking, you aren't in dispute with the neighbour, the council is.

Are you hiding away in my house? We live on a new development and our neighbour has everything you list. My husband keeps saying that he will have to get some good speakers and play Gregorian chant! Seriously though, I can sympathise and will watch your post to see if anyone has a simple, positive and practical idea. I suppose it is a generational thing. Our other neighbours have a water feature which I have posted about!

Sorry.... it’s up to you if you disclose? You’ll be asked specifically if there are any neighbour disputes when you sell your house, and you’ll sign the document, and this forms part of the contract. It’s absolutely legally binding, and if you have lied, the buyers can sue you.

What would actually count as a 'dispute' with a neighbour when it comes to selling a house?

Is it just disagreements about things?

Or is it more extreme things like a boundary dispute?

Just interested as I've been hearing more and more about this recently and contemplating a move in the next couple of years.

If you think you may be entering into this area it definitely worth paying for professional legal advice before raising a potential dispute with your neighbour. I'm sure a good property solicitor will be up to date with current legislation and case law. Spending a bit of cash now could save a lot of heartache later

This is one of those areas where I think we have it pretty good here in France. as I’ve explained before we have obnoxious neighbors but at least when it comes to noise all we have to do is call the town police. We have actual laws that prevent noise pollution during both day and night. We literally just gave up trying to ask nicely, they got the message after we and other neighbors made calls... 135€ fine for each complaint and 3 complaints in 6 months a nice little court appearance and 1000€ fine and warning that if it goes that far again the housing committee will start proceedings to have them forced to sell up.... seems harsh but it’s been a relatively quiet summer this year so far!

Best yet everything is anonymous they just get told x number of complaints have been received.

Unfortunately we live in a ‘would you mind awfully’ country.
We also have rules about noise after 11pm I think it is, rarely anything done about it.
my stepson had to leave his last flat because the people downstairs had parties all the time that went on all night.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

That’s the thing Lyn we tried endlessly to do the polite thing and simply explain that the noise bothered us,and that at night the noise in my sons bedroom was making him move to the lounge to get some sleep (very thin walls).... but in the end you sometimes have to take a stand, and at least here we were not alone as it is a large block and many people were having the same problem.

Thanks folks for the suggestions. We don’t really want to approach them on this.

Either way, we will look into water features and will plant our garden as nicely as possible to distract us from it!
