Bamboo for screening
Hi, I am considering planting bamboo to act as a screen (approx 4m) in height.
I would rather go for a clumping form however i am a bit lost which one to choose from given there are many varieties.
1) Does clumping form need a barrier?
I am considering planting in a container / trough as i'm worried about it spreading.
I would like to pick an upright one thus avoiding a bushy one.
How much space in terms of depth should i leave in terms of planting bamboo?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you really, really want to, for a bamboo that size you'd need a depth of about of metre- big plants have big roots in my experience but I'm happy to be corrected. If it's in a container then it will always need an awful lot of watering. Have you got the time and inclination?
Can you give us more idea of what you want to screen and a photo
So I'm doing this and will see if I get any taller canes.
This man's you tube talks about bamboo might help you choose the right one.

The bamboo put a stop to that and gave us back our privacy.
Its just the b**dy noise that's hard to do anything about during the day. Why people think its okay to throw parties in the middle of a quite residential estate in a tiny garden I don't know. Inconsiderate ba***ds.
Sorry rant over.
Golden Bamboo ( Phyllostachys) I got from B&Q about 5 years or more ago. Maybe they still do it.

The older you get, the more you realise that it is OK to live a life others don't understand.
Kili - i feel for you. Its annoying that we have to think about making our gardens private as a result of the actions of others. Did you put a barrier in for the bamboo? Was it planted direct into ground or a container?
